
June 16, 2024 marks 160 years since his birthPavel Nikolaevich Lashchenkov – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Russian and So the hygienist, Professor of the Department of Hygiene Tomsk University. The discoverer bactericidal action lysozyme.
He was born in 1865 in Kharkov in a family href=”https://ru.ruwiki.ru/wiki/%D0%A1%D0%B2%D1%8F%D1%89%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%BA”>священника. He graduated from the Medical Faculty of Kharkiv University with a doctor’s degree with honors and the title of a district doctor in 1888.
In 1895, he became an associate professor, taught courses in dietetics and public hygiene. Soon he was sent to study at The Military Medical Academy, where in 1893 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine, after defending his dissertation on the topic “The effect of direct electric current on osmosis through living and dead tissues”.
In 1904, he moved toTomsk, with the rank ofпрофессора where he starts working at Tomsk University. In 1908, he headed the Department of Hygiene, which he led until the end of his life. He focuses on scientific activities.
In 1909, he discovered lysozyme in chicken protein, describing it as a proteolytic enzyme with bactericidal properties. His hygiene textbook was awarded a gold medal at the All-Russian Hygienic Exhibition in St. Petersburg in 1913 and has gone through four editions. P. N. Lashchenkov is the author of the manual on experimental hygiene.
