Through the pages of history. 135 years since the birth of Sergey Vladimirovich Myasoedov

July 5, 2024 turns 135 years oldsince my birthdaySergey Vladimirovich Myasoedov is a great scientist, Doctor of Biological Sciences, professor at Tomsk University and Medical Institute.

After studying at the university, S.V. Myasoedov remains at the Department of Histology in order to prepare for professorship. In parallel, he conducts research in the laboratory and is the keeper of the anatomical and histological cabinet. From 1916 to 1924, Sergey Vladimirovich conducted pedagogical work at the Military Medical Academy.

Since 1924, S.V. Myasoedov has been the head of the Department of Histology and Embryology at Tomsk University. At the same time, Sergey Vladimirovich became the head of the Department of General Biology.

The memoirs of contemporaries indicate that Professor S.V. Myasoedov was a brilliant teacher and a great scientist. It is known that students laid a carpet on which he entered the classroom, and bouquets of flowers were placed on the table – they showed respect for their beloved teacher and his lectures in such a peculiar way. The students listened to the presentation of the material with bated breath.

Graduates recall their student years 25 years ago: “We, doctors graduated in 1936, remember well and thank our teachers-professors, associate professors, assistants, who at one time spent a lot of work and effort to give us the knowledge necessary for practical work. We remember the wonderful lectures of S.V. Myasoedov, A.G. Fetisov, T.V. Serebrov, D.I. Goldberg, D.D. Yablokov, I.V. Toroptsev and many others.”

A student of S.V. Myasoedov, associate professor N.P. Zavadovskaya recalls the teacher in these words: “He was a very delicate man who spoke in a soft, penetrating voice, trying to clarify his thought, make it intelligible. At the same time, it was felt that the professor was mildly striving to reveal the full scope of his interlocutor’s knowledge.”

The “Workbook on Histology” written by the scientist in 1931 has been preserved, which has not lost its significance today. Several monographs and articles have survived, mainly devoted to his research: the structure of the nucleus, nucleolus, genetics.

The scientist’s life ended abruptly. On December 26, 1936, Sergei Vladimirovich was arrested by the NKVD, and on December 5, 1937, he was shot in Novosibirsk. He was rehabilitated in 1956.

All these years, S.V. Myasoedov’s wife, Olga Petrovna, and then his son Vsevolod carefully kept a small archive of the scientist. The son has done a lot to restore his father’s good name. Nowadays, many documents, photographs and scientific works are carefully stored at the Department of Histology, Embryology and Cytology of SibSMU.
